No state east of the Mississippi covers more weather in one drive. The Outer Banks take hurricanes head-on, the coastal plain floods for days afterwards, the Piedmont gets the ice storms, and the southern Appalachians are the wettest ground in the eastern United States. Floyd, Fran, Florence and Helene are all inside living memory.

South Carolina sits where the Atlantic bends in, and it collects what the ocean sends. Hugo came ashore at Sullivan's Island, Matthew and the thousand-year flood of 2015 both parked over the Midlands, and the Lowcountry floods on a clear-sky king tide. Inland, the Upstate catches the tail of the southern Appalachians.

Charlotte is the one Carolinas metro that does not care about the state line: a third of it wakes up in South Carolina and drives to work in North Carolina. The weather ignores it too — the ice storms come down the I-85 corridor, the spring severe season crosses both Piedmonts, and Hugo was still a hurricane when it reached uptown, 200 miles inland.

The Triangle sits far enough inland that the hurricanes arrive as rain rather than wind, and that is its problem: Fran and Floyd and Florence all did their damage here with water and falling trees on saturated ground. Winter is the other one — the ice line sets up along I-85 more often than not, and it decides between a nuisance and a week without power.

These mountains wring out more rain than anywhere else in the eastern United States, and Helene showed what that means when a tropical system arrives on ground already soaked: the French Broad and the Swannanoa took out whole towns in September 2024. Elevation runs from 1,200 feet to 6,684 at Mount Mitchell, and the forecast changes the whole way up.

The Blue Ridge escarpment rises straight out of the Piedmont here, and it does the same thing to weather that it does to the horizon: it lifts it. Upslope flow wrings out rain on the northern edge of these counties that never reaches Greenville itself, and cold air spills back down the mountain gaps in winter to freeze roads the valley forecast said would only be wet.

Almost none of this is above ten feet. The tide decides how much rain the storm drains can take, which is why a routine afternoon thunderstorm floods the peninsula on a spring king tide and passes without incident six hours later. Hurricane season is the long shadow — Hugo came ashore just north of here — but sunny-day flooding is the one that arrives on a schedule.

This coast sticks out far enough to catch storms that miss everyone else, and the Cape Fear River drains a basin big enough that the worst flooding often arrives days after the wind has gone — Florence put more water into Bladen and Columbus counties than the coast itself. Sea breeze runs the summer: it fires a line of storms inland most afternoons and leaves the beach in sun.

The Triad sits where the Piedmont starts to tilt, and in winter that puts it on the wrong side of the wedge: cold air dams against the Blue Ridge and slides down the I-40 corridor, so the same storm can give Winston-Salem snow, Greensboro sleet and Burlington cold rain. Spring trades that for the severe line coming out of the southwest.
